Taking Taxi in Singapore

It is quite straightforard to taking the taxi in Singapore: in most places, you just have to stand by the roadside and flag one down. There are between eighteen to twenty-one thousand taxis on the road in Singapore and they are all metered. At some shopping malls, there are taxi stands where you can queue up for your taxi. The starting fare is around S$2.40 (different companies have slightly different fare structure) for the first kilometer, and 10 cents for every 225 meters thereafter.

Some taxis take a surcharge of S$1.00 if you board it during peak hour, which is usually Mondays to Saturdays, from 7:30-9:30am and 5:00-8:00pm. In addition, there's another surcharge of S$1.00 for entering the Central Business District (CBD) from Mondays to Thursdays from 5:00-8:00pm; and Fridays and Saturdays from 5:00pm-12:00 midnight.

If you hail a taxi after midnight, there is a 50% surcharge between midnight and 6:00am. Also, if you are taking one from Changi Airport, there is a S$5.00 surcharge. Taxis displaying a red destination sign on its dashboard is changing shift - they are unlikely to stop for you unless they think you intend to go in the same direction as they are.
